Tray return: Schools, parents must inculcate social responsibility

The returning of trays is about more than just the action. The underlying message should be one of responsibility to the society and environment.

While schools can do more to help students understand the rationale for returning trays, it must be noted that parents also play a crucial role in educating their children on this ("Practice must extend beyond school canteen" by Ms Oei Khoen Hwa; May 11).

Parents are a child's immediate role models, and their actions speak louder than words.

For the message of social responsibility to be effectively passed down to the child, both the school and parents must sing the same tune.
