The imposition of fines, no matter how hefty, on public-listed companies providing public services, hurts no one ("SMRT fined $5.4m for massive breakdown"; Sept 24).
This fine is neither a preventive nor corrective measure to address maintenance issues and the possibility of future breakdowns.
The SMRT should put together a task force, if it has not already, comprising SMRT personnel from across various divisions and foreign experts, to scrutinise operational processes and provide recommendations to adopt corrective and preventive measures to minimise future breakdowns.
