Stop forwarding articles that spread hate and fear

Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam has rightly said that Singaporeans need to reach out to their Muslim neighbours and build social cohesion ("Stop anti-Muslim views from taking root: Shanmugam"; March 31).

Various irresponsible social media sources are creating hate and fear through their articles by, for instance, describing Islam as a religion that preaches terrorism.

People should be educated so that they understand that it is not the religion that preaches terrorism, but rather some individuals who have twisted its teachings to suit their own agendas.

Yet, many people believe what they read on the Internet, and forward such material to their contacts without thinking. I have come across people in Singapore who continue to forward such hateful and untrue material.

They should stop forwarding such articles, which create more hate and fear.
