'Smartphone zombies' should be punished

Motorists are penalised for using their mobile phones when driving.

Similarly, pedestrians who are glued to their smartphones when crossing the road should be punished, as a deterrence ("Seoul puts up road safety signs to warn 'smartphone zombies'"; June 27).

Pedestrians should not assume that motorists will always be able to see them or stop their vehicles in time. Pedestrians themselves need to be alert for possible danger.

Jaywalking is an offence, but, ironically, jaywalkers are generally more alert and aware of their surroundings than smartphone zombies, many of whom do not even bother to take a cursory glance at the traffic when crossing the road, especially at signalised and zebra crossings.
