Security should be everyone's priority

It is very sad to read that a Singaporean died during the recent bombing in Bangkok ("Bomb blast in Bangkok kills at least 16"; Aug 18) .

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean has said that we have to be constantly vigilant against such attacks ("Singapore condemns 'heinous attack'"; Aug 19).

Talks about possible dangers should be given at schools and community venues.

Everyone must be encouraged to report suspicious characters and activity, and must be on the alert for potential threats.

The sight of stepped-up security patrols could serve as a deterrent to would-be attackers.

However, all these measures will have to be carefully balanced, so as not to cause unnecessary panic.
