Party who caused oil spill should pay for the damage

Apart from the oil spill on the Tampines Expressway on March 11, there have been four other serious oil spills on our roads since January, including one on the Bukit Timah Expressway on Jan 29 and a massive one on Lornie Road on Feb 16.

Each of the five oil spills has caused considerable economic loss to the country. Productivity was affected, as people could not get to work on time, due to the traffic jam.

Also, the cost of the clean-up, which may involve the Singapore Civil Defence Force, National Environment Agency and Land Transport Authority, is considerable.

The Government should consider passing legislation to make the party who caused the oil spill bear the cost of the damage.

In addition, there should be a penalty to discourage offenders from committing such offences in the future.
