Online voting presents challenges

The Elections Department has studied the feasibility of Internet voting for Singaporeans ("Consider online voting using SingPass" by Dr George Wong Seow Choon; Forum Online, Aug 24).

It is not without various challenges, which include cybersecurity threats and difficulties in preventing voter fraud. These factors are of high-risk level, especially when it comes to voting.

In addition, voters comprise citizens of different age groups and levels of IT savviness. It will take time for less tech-savvy citizens to adopt technology.

Using paper ballot at polling stations remains the simplest and most transparent method of voting currently that ensures the integrity and secrecy of our voting process.
