EDUCATION Minister Heng Swee Keat has said that as a child, "it means that someone cares for you, and wants the very best for you" ("Minister reflects on what it means to be a kid, a parent"; last Saturday).

However, this excludes children who come from more disadvantaged backgrounds, who may not have people to love them.

I am a privileged child, who has the full support and love of my family, and I consider myself very lucky. But what about other children who may not have someone who cares for them or wants the very best for them?

We should not forget the plight of underprivileged children in our efforts to build an inclusive society.
