MP did the right thing by stepping down

Bukit Batok MP David Ong's sudden resignation over an alleged affair came as a shock to many people ("MP David Ong resigns; by-election to be called"; March 13).

It may be time for political parties to turn the microscope on the personal lives of their members to prevent any potential scandals from taking place later.

Mr Ong had done a good job running his constituency and serving the residents with dedication.

However, after admitting to his "personal indiscretion", he did the right thing morally by stepping down for the best interest of the party, his constituents and family.

A good man is hard to find, but I am optimistic we can find another man - or woman - who will be equally good at the job.

Let us look to getting good candidates in the by-election and a new MP, so that Bukit Batok constituents will continue to be served well.
