I represent a group of community dog feeders in Bukit Panjang.
Recently, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) and a pest control agency have been trying to trap the stray dogs living in Zhenghua Park and the patch of grassland behind the Tree House and Foresque condominiums.
According to the AVA, some residents have complained about the dogs' barking.
We urge the AVA and the town council to adopt a more creative and humane approach to integrating stray dogs within the community through a trap-neuter-release programme, organised with the support of community feeders.
The authorities could also consider adopting the approach of the National Parks Board (NParks) in Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West.
Under a pilot programme launched in 2012, fenced-up enclosures were placed on a slope frequented by stray dogs.
The dogs were lured into the enclosures in their search for food. After being rounded up, they were taken to shelters for neutering and rehoming.
We hope the AVA, NParks and town council can work together with community feeders to save the stray dogs.
