Make helmets mandatory for cyclists

In a photo accompanying the report on Feb 29 ("Thousands have fun on first Car-Free Sunday"), ministers Khaw Boon Wan and Lawrence Wong were seen leading a pack of cyclists past the National Gallery Singapore.

Everyone was wearing a helmet except one cyclist behind Mr Khaw.

In our effort to encourage cycling both as a sport and as a mode of transport, the Land Transport Authority should make the wearing of helmets compulsory in Singapore, especially on the road.

Besides educating people on the importance of helmets, we must be seen to be actively promoting the use of this safety device.

One way to do this is to ensure that organisers of all public and mass cycling events include a clause to that effect.

On the day of the event, organisers must actively enforce the ruling.

Once cyclists get used to wearing helmets, it will become second nature.

Ask a motorcyclist: If he is not wearing a helmet, he feels that something is missing.
