Lesson to learn from man in flooded cafe

The elderly man reading his newspaper in a flooded cafe in Hong Kong epitomises the will, dexterity and character of the older generation, not just in Hong Kong but also in Singapore ("What's the fuss about a little flood? Let me read my newspaper"; Oct 22).

It was this "never say die" attitude and will that allowed Singapore to develop over the past 50 years.

I hope this episode sends a strong message to young people on how we should adapt, deal with and make the best of any situation.

The world is never a perfect place, and moaning and complaining without being constructive serves no real purpose at all.
