Leadership renewal essential in coming years

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong kept the passing of the baton uppermost in his mind when he chose his Cabinet, thereby charting a course that will ensure our future for the next 50 years and beyond ("PM names Cabinet aimed at leadership succession"; Sept 29).

Leadership renewal is perhaps the most critical outcome of the general election.

It is not going to be an easy task to find someone who can withstand the pressures of the top job.

This person has to take on the duties and perform to the fullest, bearing in mind that the three prime ministers Singapore has had so far were more than equal to the task - and are indeed hard acts to follow.

With all the new blood being brought into the Cabinet, someone should emerge and prove able to take the reins.

It may require the collective team to steady the ship initially, but one among the fourth-generation leaders should stand up and take charge within five years. This is not a bridge too far.

Now that the Cabinet has been picked, a steady passage can be determined, which will take Singapore to the next level of development and onward to greater glory.
