I join our nation in congratulating Joseph Schooling for winning Singapore's first Olympic gold medal ("Historic moment for Schooling, historic moment for Singapore"; Aug 14), a fitting birthday gift for Singapore and an incredible feat, which, as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said, made us very proud indeed.
My suggestion is to honour Schooling with not only the usual accolades but also a national holiday, like Mountain Day in Japan, that promotes sports and the outdoors for all in Singapore.
Schooling has proven that a small nation like us can achieve much.
If you look at Singapore's greatest sporting achievements over the years, these have mostly been water-related sports such as swimming, water polo and sailing.
Thus, perhaps we should focus on our strengths and concentrate our efforts and limited resources on swimming and sea sports, as we have done in the past.
After all, we are an island surrounded by water.
