It saddens me that a terror attack has occurred again in France ("Many foreigners, children among 84 dead in attack by truck in Nice"; July 16).

It is time the European Union (EU) set up passport checks at national borders.

Currently, one only needs to have one's passport checked at one point. After that, one is able to enter other countries within the EU without a passport check.

Such a liberal policy is prone to abuse. It was reported that the terrorists of the last Paris bombings had travelled freely between Paris and Belgium.

Terrorists need only pick the weakest entry point and, once through, are free to move to other countries within the EU.

Almost every major city in the EU has pockets where illegal immigrants reside and organised crimes abound. Human trafficking is also a very real problem.
