Ensure lifts are regularly serviced

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam is right to say that there can be no compromise on lift safety ("DPM: Develop culture of zero accidents, especially for lifts"; Oct 15).

With almost our entire population living in HDB flats, lift maintenance should be done on schedule and more regularly to ensure faults are detected and attended to promptly.

In addition, contractors should be required to have enough trained technicians to service the number of lifts around.

I live in an HDB flat and I notice that sometimes, lifts are not serviced according to the schedule displayed on the notice board.

Postponement of servicing for heavily used lifts needs to be avoided, and repairs of faulty ones have to be conducted promptly, if zero accidents are to be achieved.
