Enact tougher laws to protect taxi drivers

There is a need for tougher laws to protect taxi drivers, whose job seems to be getting more dangerous.

They face the risk of being accosted, attacked or robbed each time they pick up passengers.

With their eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel, taxi drivers are practically sitting ducks, at the mercy of others.

The authorities should commission a study that looks into enhancing the safety of driving a taxi here, especially as there have been recent cases in which taxi drivers were robbed by passengers wielding weapons such as a chopper ("Man gets jail, caning for slashing cabby"; Dec 23).
