What Singapore can now do for Joseph Schooling, as well as the younger generation of not just swimmers, but also aspiring athletes of other sports, is to defer his national service further ("Joseph Schooling's NS deferred till after 2020 Olympics"; ST Online, Aug 15).

Perhaps exempting Schooling completely from NS might be a little tough, but could there be an alternative way for him to do NS? Perhaps it could be deferred until he retires from competitive swimming?
