Who: Shelby Doshi, 30, cat sitter and freelance school trainer in courses such as creative writing, social etiquette, and speech and drama.

My family: Married, with no children.

My home: A four-room HDB flat at Pinnacle@Duxton.

My passions: Reading, watching movies, volunteering to care for community cats and with my residents' committee.

I started writing to the Forum page...: In 2012.

What I write about: Animal welfare, unjust rules and biases relating to social issues.

Why I write: I hope to reach out to those who may not understand community cats and who find them a nuisance.

I want them to understand that, like us, cats are living things which need a place to live, food and water, and affection.

There are many volunteers willing to give these animals all that out of their own time and pocket, but we seek the compassion and understanding of society to allow us to do our jobs. People must understand that we cannot simply remove something we don't like.

I read the Forum page because...: I want to know what issues concern Singaporeans, and I am glad that people are more vocal about raising their concerns.

My wish for Singapore:

Mahatma Gandhi once said that the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

My wish is for the Government to take a page out of the book of other countries - such as the US and Australia - which support animal welfare causes.

Compassion and empathy can go a long way. People need to be taught from a young age to do right by the less fortunate.

If one doesn't treat an innocent animal right, how could one treat a human being right?
