Writer Of The Week

Mr Poon enjoys brisk walking, reading food reviews and trying the food he reads about. He writes on issues that affect the sandwiched class, blue-collar workers and the ageing generation.

Who: Mr Ronnie Poon Beng Choon, 67. I retired after 46 years in the publishing and print media industry. I set up a logistics company thereafter and sold it after seven months and now work as a consultant for it.

My family: Married to full-time housewife Agnes Tan.

My home: A condominium in the east.

My passions: Nothing strenuous for my age; just brisk walking and eating - I'm always on the lookout for food reviews so I can taste the food for myself.

I first started writing to the Forum page in...: 1990.

What I write about: Mainly topical issues and policies that affect the sandwiched class, blue-collar workers and the ageing generation, as well as issues that affect most people or are often neglected.

Why I write: To share my views on what and how I feel as a responsible citizen, for the betterment of the next generation. The Forum page is a good platform for efficient and effective feedback on issues to be raised and responded to.

I read the Forum page because...: I can learn from the letters through the exchange of ideas and thinking. The platform provides alternative viewpoints from readers on issues being discussed.

My wish for Singapore: We have seen how everyone's life has improved in the past 50 years, be it in varying degrees.

My wish for the next 50 years is that life will be even better for our next generation, so they can live harmoniously and cohesively in a multiracial, multicultural and multi-religious society, and that Singapore will continue to be safe and be respected by others near and far.
