Wireless@SG connectivity: IDA replies

Wi-Fi capacity planning is normally based on the projection of the average number of subscribers per floor area covered by each Wi-Fi access point ("Wireless@SG service in need of a reboot" by Mr Matthew Ong Koon Lock; Jan 1).

The volume of bandwidth required to serve this pool of subscribers at each Wi-Fi access point is also taken into consideration to ensure better experience.

To ensure fair usage of Wireless@SG, access speed is also provisioned at up to 2Mbps per user, which is adequate for commonly used applications such as e-mail, social media and Web surfing.

The Wireless@SG logins at the airport and a typical public hospital are relatively high, at 40,000 to 70,000 sessions and 4,000 to 8,000 sessions a day, respectively.

Nonetheless, connectivity experience can be affected by many factors, from network capacity and coverage to even content type and phone settings.

It could also be impacted during peak periods when there are large numbers of concurrent users logging on to the network.

Mr Ong's comments are, thus, valued and useful in our discussions with stakeholders. We have already contacted Mr Ong regarding his connectivity issue.

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) will continue to work actively with operators and venue owners to review and ensure that the Wireless@SG service remains robust enough to meet increased usage and demand at public areas.
