Tweak policies to provide more support

Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob has urged employers not to be prejudiced against people with mental health conditions ("People with mental issues face job discrimination"; Sunday).

It is indeed laudable that the Government is taking such a proactive stand on the issue.

However, mental health conditions do not entitle a person to be classified as a "person with disability" in Singapore. Thus, they are not eligible for policies, schemes and initiatives intended for people with disabilities.

Perhaps, changing this would enable those afflicted to gain more community support in their quest for recovery.
