Teach Singaporeans to care for animals

It is inconceivable how some Singaporeans treat their pets like toys that can be cast aside when they are tired of them ("Jail for woman who ill-treated her dogs"; Feb 24).

Even with punishments meted out to those who have abused animals, the ill treatment has continued.

To ensure that more Singaporeans are educated on this issue, schools should include a "care for animals" topic in the Character and Citizenship Education curriculum, and the Government should step up its publicity campaign to drive home the message that animals deserve our care and respect.
