Set up mall for seniors

Ageing is a natural journey which everyone will embark on ("Turn longevity into a positive force: PM Lee" and "Kwong Wai Shiu starts its $96m transformation"; both published last Friday).

Opportunities abound for Singapore to explore and experiment, to enable the aged to integrate with the young and lead a fulfilling life in their silver years.

Just take the numerous malls popping up all over the island. Not a single one is targeted at serving the needs of the silver generation.

Why not have a development that caters to the food and beverage and retail needs of our ageing population?

It can be located near an area where many elderly Singaporeans reside.

The mall operators can also give senior citizens priority when hiring employees to man the stores in this senior-friendly mall. It can be a positive influence to have seniors serving seniors.

The objective is not to segregate the aged from the young, but rather to provide a place where their needs are better catered to.

Let us approach the silver tsunami with a positive and creative mindset.
