Keep alive memories of St John's island

The authorities should start a memory project to document and preserve Singaporeans' memories of St John's Island ("Last islanders on St John's to leave by new year"; Dec 13).

I also urge the Singapore Land Authority to take a measured approach to any development of this beautiful island to protect its rustic charm and rich flora and fauna.

The island is part of Singapore's heritage and history after all, and should be kept in its present rustic state, where possible, for future generations to enjoy.

I have fond memories of St John's Island, canoeing there (before the Marina Barrage was erected) with my mates from the Kallang Sea Sports Club to spend the weekend there, roughing it out and being gently lulled to sleep by the waves as we lay in our hammocks by the beach under the stars.

It is sad to read the news about St John's Island.
