IDA looking into having more fibre cable contractors

Mr Chai Koh Leong, in his letter ("End monopoly on fibre-optic cabling works"; Dec 23, 2015), asked the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) to consider allowing other contractors to work on fibre-optic cabling within homes.

We thank Mr Chai for his feedback.

IDA is seeking to facilitate more qualified installers of fibre cables and termination points to provide more service choices to consumers.

We have consulted the public and the telecoms industry on the implementation of a new framework that will license more qualified contractors to install optical fibre, coaxial and structured cabling within homes, in addition to copper cables.

This will ensure that contractors will have the necessary skillsets to provide good quality cable installation work.

IDA is currently reviewing the feedback received and aims to announce its decision in the later part of the year.
