It is unrealistic to expect to have rental bicycles right at our doorstep. Those who want such a service should buy their own bicycle.
I strongly support Ms Toh Shieh Fern's proposal (Sustainable bike-sharing model requires proper docking stations; June 26).
With modern technology, there is no reason why we cannot easily have docking stations for shared bicycles.
Riders should be required to return their bicycles to these docking stations to get their deposit back.
Riders can also go to these docking stations to rent a bicycle.
These stations can be located at MRT stations, bus interchanges, parks and carparks, or near hawker centres, condominiums and other places with high human traffic.
Just as cars and motorcycles have to pay parking fees, it is only fair that rental bicycles also pay for parking space.
This fee can be shared among the bike-sharing companies.
Bike-sharing companies should work together on this.
After all, they have a vested interest in making the bike-sharing business model work.
