Good leaders needed to carry nation forward

In the 50 years since independence, we have become a vibrant, multiracial and prosperous Singapore.

Separating from Malaysia only spurred our country's leaders and people to face the dire challenge of building up our economy, defence, industries, education and society.

We did well, and are grateful to Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his dedicated pioneer Cabinet.

What will Singapore's future be like in the coming years?

No one can predict what will happen in the next 50 years, but our future starts now, with the impending general election.

The political hustings have begun.

Hopefully, like in a mature society, the election will be fought based on which political party or parties can put forth pragmatic and realistic manifestos for consideration.

The representatives of the political parties should genuinely care for everyone, regardless of social class.

We need good leadership to carry us forward, and those elected to Parliament must be fully committed and active.

No matter which political party they represent, parliamentarians must have the gumption to speak for Singaporeans, particularly those in their constituencies.

It would be unwise to vote for self-serving and immature politicians.
