Ensuring public safety while not causing undue alarm

The police respond to many incidents involving unattended items on a daily basis ("See a bag that looks suspicious? Don't hang around" by Ms Fong Hang Yin; Jan 21, and "Don't take threat of unattended bags lightly" by Mr Shah Pakri; Forum Online, Jan 20).

Officers are trained to conduct a threat assessment in such incidents and take the necessary steps to ensure public safety while not causing undue public alarm.

The police would like to remind members of the public not to leave their belongings unattended in public spaces, as this may unnecessarily cause alarm in the current security climate.

Members of the public should continue to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities or people by calling 999 or the police hotline on 1800-255-0000.

Together, we can make Singapore a safe and secure home for everyone.
