Ensure old cars are safe for use

While car owners will keep their cars in pristine condition during the first few years, they are likely to cut down on maintenance when the cars are due for scrapping ("Demand for old cars for rental slows scrappage"; last Wednesday).

The use of cars due for scrapping will reduce start-up and operating costs for taxi app firms.

It also makes economic sense to put such cars to good use before sending them to the scrapyard.

However, poorly maintained cars may compromise their passengers' safety.

The authorities may wish to look into ways of imposing some checks before such vehicles are let out for public use.
