Ensure adequate parliamentary, public debate

The Constitutional Commission on the elected presidency has released a comprehensive and clear report ("Panel proposes key changes to elected presidency"; Thursday).

The media has provided accurate and useful summaries of the report's content.

But the issues are complex because they are interrelated.

So it is important that there be adequate parliamentary debate and public discussion on the issues.

The implications, including both the intended national goals and the possible unintended negative consequences, must be frankly discussed.

If we can do this, we will evolve a system of governance that benefits Singapore and Singaporeans.
