Electric vehicles identified as a growth area: EDB

We thank Mr Alex Yip Kit Meng for his suggestion for the Economic Development Board (EDB) to develop an electric vehicle (EV) components manufacturing industry in Singapore (Potential in electric vehicle trend; Sept 29), and agree with his views.

Indeed, EVs have great potential in Singapore and is one of the growth areas we have identified under the broader theme of urban mobility in the Committee on the Future Economy report.

The EDB has been actively growing the urban mobility sector by engaging companies to develop, test and commercialise innovative urban mobility products and solutions in Singapore, such as EV car-sharing, autonomous vehicles and ride-hailing.

We have also developed a cluster of Singapore-based companies which design and manufacture a wide range of automotive electronics and sub-systems, such as controllers, communication and power management modules, that go into the making of vehicles, including EVs.

These companies have helped us to capture new opportunities and create good jobs for Singaporeans.
