Do more to help foreign workers

It is saddening and infuriating to read about foreign workers being in debt for years instead of earning an income after arriving in Singapore (Singaporean dream sours for some Bangladeshi workers as they go home with big debts; ST Online, June 20).

I am confident this will not be the last time we hear of foreign workers being taken advantage of or crippled by debt.

We are highly dependent on foreign workers. We need them to build infrastructure to improve our economy and allow us to live more comfortably.

There is an urgent need to pay more attention to the implementation of schemes to help foreign workers.

Perhaps we can also show our appreciation to them by greeting them or offering them a bottle of water when we encounter them.

After all, they are trying to accomplish a simple goal - to achieve a higher standard of living for their families.
