Cut reliance on antibiotics

Singapore can play a major role in funding more research and development for a vaccine or treatment against superbugs ("Superbugs - why they matter to Singapore"; Sept 19, "Call for policy action to stamp out superbugs" and "Raise awareness of threat of superbugs" by Ms Lee Soh Hong; both published on Sept 22, and "China goes the whole hog in war on superbugs"; Sept 25).

There could also be a campaign, targeting both doctors and the public, advising against the over-prescription of antibiotics.

Patients should be encouraged to rest more and let their bodies' natural healing mechanism do the work instead of pressuring doctors to give them antibiotics.
