I welcome the Ministry of Transport's plans to review private car hire services such as UberX ("Govt to look into car hire services like UberX"; last Saturday).
As rightly pointed out by Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, taxi drivers do not shun competition.
Taxi drivers are aware that their industry faces different forms of competition, from buses, trains and even licensed chauffeur limousine services. However, what we hope for is fair competition.
These private vehicles for hire currently operate without proper licensing frameworks for both the drivers and vehicles. Drivers are not properly trained to provide services and the vehicles are not required to undergo frequent safety checks.
Many taxi drivers like myself look forward to fair competition.
