China handset maker Xiaomi set the bar with its low-priced but powerful smartphones, and it is now looking to do the same with the tablet market.
Xiaomi founder Lei Jun took to the stage at an event in Beijing today to announce the Mi Pad, a 7.9-inch tablet with a 2,048 x 1,536-pixel screen resolution. With hardware and design specifications that matches the iPad mini with Retina display, the Mi Pad even looks very much like Apple’s 7.9-inch tablet.
The difference is in the price, as the 16GB Mi Pad will retail at 1,499RMB (S$301) and 1,699RMB (S$341) for the 64GB model. A beta version of the Mi Pad is expected to be available in China early next month, but the company did not announce general market availability.
