Vard Holdings unit wins €4 million contract to design ship for Chilean Navy

SINGAPORE - Shipbuilder Vard Holdings unit Vard Marine has won a new contract for the design of one Antarctic icebreaking vessel for the Chilean Navy.

Valued at about €4 million (S$6.2 million), the contract calls for consulting naval architecture and marine engineering firm Vard Marine to develop the basic design of the ship that will be constructed at the ASMAR shipyard in Talcahuano, Chile.

The contract was awarded by ASMAR Shipbuilding & Ship Repair Company, and the vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2021.

The new vessel will be about 125 metres in length with a displacement of over 13,000 tonnes and installed power of 14.5 megawatts to permit breaking one metre of ice at two knots.
