Share prices on the Singapore bourse began the first trading day of the year on a positive note, with the Straits Times Index gaining 7.22 points or 0.23 per cent to 3,174.65.

Gainers led losers 252 to 149 while 388 counters were unchanged. Some 4.31 billion shares worth $789.5 million were done.
