Swiss stock exchange closes down 5.96 per cent on soaring franc

GENEVA (AFP) - Swiss stocks closed down nearly 6 per cent on Friday, a day after the central bank stunned markets by scrapping its three-year bid to hold down the value of the franc.

The Swiss stock exchange's main SMI index shed 5.96 per cent to 7,899.59 points.
