Energy-sector veteran Mohd Hassan Marican received a top award from the Oil & Gas Council earlier this week at a gathering of the sector's most influential executives in Europe.

Held in London, the 2015 World Oil & Gas awards recognised this year's best-performing companies and executives in the industry.

Tan Sri Hassan Marican was honoured with the prestigious lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the sector.

In his acceptance speech at the awards ceremony, the former Petronas chief thanked all the people who have worked with him over the years.

He highlighted the importance and versatility of the energy business, saying that companies which are in competition at times will have to partner each other at other times.

He also stressed the importance of human capital and developing individuals.

Good talent, coupled with new technology, will be key to ensuring the continued growth of the energy business, he said.

Mr Hassan Marican was the president and chief executive of Malaysia's state oil firm Petronas from 1995 until his retirement in February 2010.

He is the chairman of Singapore Power, Pavilion Energy and Semb- corp Marine, as well as a serving director of the Regional Economic Development Authority of Sarawak, Sarawak Energy, Semb- corp Industries, Lambert Energy Advisory and MH Marican Advisory.

He is also a senior international adviser of Temasek International Advisors, a subsidiary of Temasek Holdings.

In January this year, Pavilion Energy group chief executive Seah Moon Ming was awarded the Oil & Gas Council 2014 Asia-Pacific Executive of the Year.
