BASRA (AFP) - Thousands of people protested against an anti-Islam film on Friday in Basra in south Iraq, burning American and Israeli flags and carrying pictures of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The protesters marched for more than an hour in central Basra, some carrying large posters of Ayatollah Khamenei, while police and soldiers deployed in the area, an AFP correspondent said.

They shouted slogans like "No, no America, no, no Israel" and "Yes, yes for the Messenger, we sacrifice for you, O Messenger of God," in reference to the Prophet Muhammad.

The protesters also burned United States (US) and Israeli flags.
