Suspect in custody as Atlanta-area elementary school rocked by gunfire
DECATUR, GEORGIA (AP) - Police have a suspect in custody after reports of gunfire at an Atlanta-area elementary school, according to a school superintendent.
Mr Michael Thurmond told The Associated Press that school officials were doing a head count to ensure all students at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy were safe on Tuesday.
Television footage showed students had been evacuated from the school and were sitting outside in a field. Mr Thurmond said he was not aware of any injuries.
DeKalb County School board chairman Melvin Johnson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution there were reports of shots being fired inside the building. A call to DeKalb County police was not immediately returned.
