Suicide bomber kills 12 in cafe in central Iraq, say the police
BAGHDAD (AP) - The Iraqi authorities say a suicide bomber has killed 12 people in a cafe in a Shi'ite-majority town in central Iraq.
The police said that the suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt on Monday evening inside a cafe in Balad, 80km north of Baghdad, adding that 25 people were wounded.
A medical official in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to talk to journalists.
Violence has risen dramatically in Iraq in recent months. Civilian targets such as cafes and markets, frequently in Shi'ite areas, have been favorite targets for insurgents.
