Rupert Murdoch's philanthropist mother dies at 103

SYDNEY (AFP) - Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, a much-loved Australian public figure, famed philanthropist and mother of News Corp. tycoon Rupert, has died at the age of 103, her family said.
Appointed a dame for her charitable work by Queen Elizabeth II in 1963, she passed away at her Cruden Farm home in the Melbourne suburbs on Wednesday evening.
"We have lost the most wonderful mother but we are all grateful to have had her love and wisdom for so many years," her son Rupert said in a statement.
"Throughout her life, our mother demonstrated the very best qualities of true public service.
