NEW YORK (AFP) - Police on Friday tried to piece together what happened in a posh Manhattan apartment where a mother found her two young children stabbed to death in a bathtub and their nanny attempting to slash her own throat.

The horror on Thursday, which took place in a luxurious neighborhood next to Central Park, shocked New Yorkers, who are used to leaving their children in the care of babysitters.

The nanny was hospitalised with neck and wrist cuts in an apparent suicide attempt and had not yet been charged on Friday. She is the only suspect.

According to New York Police Department Commissioner Ray Kelly, the mother, pediatrician Marina Krim, came home wondering why the nanny and the children, a boy aged two and his sister aged six, had failed to show up to a rendezvous.
