Le Monde director Erik Izraelewicz dead at 58

PARIS (AFP) - The director of the French daily Le Monde, Erik Izraelewicz, died suddenly on Tuesday at the age of 58, the group's president Louis Dreyfus told AFP.

"Eric was taken ill in the late afternoon at the editorial offices," said Mr Dreyfus.

Mr Izraelewicz, who had taken the helm at the influential centre-left newspaper last year, was rushed to a Paris hospital but pronounced dead in the evening. No cause of death was given.

"Tomorrow everyone at the paper will be in shock," said Mr Dreyfus.
