Increase in number of quakes near Spain gas storage plant
MADRID (AP) - Spain's geographical institute says there has been a large increase in the number of small earthquakes off the country's east coast, where a large underground gas storage plant is being tested before going into operation.
Government officials believe there is a direct link between the temblors and injections of fuel gas into the storage system in Castellon.
The geographical institute said on Saturday there have been 139 minor earthquakes in 10 days - a substantial increase compared with the weeks before that. During that same period, only 27 small quakes were felt in other areas of Spain.
