Egypt's president allows defiant state prosecutor to keep post

CAIRO (AFP, AP) - Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi agreed on Saturday to let state prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud keep his post, ending a crisis over Mr Mahmoud's refusal to quit after Mr Morsi dismissed him.
State television reported that the two met and sealed an agreement under which "the state prosecutor will stay on in his post", said deputy state prosecutor Adel Said, citing a "misunderstanding over Mr Mahmoud's nomination as ambassador to the Vatican".
Mr Mahmoud defied a presidential decision to remove him from his post, entering his office earlier on Saturday in a downtown Cairo courthouse flanked by security and hundreds of judicial officials.
Mr Morsi had ordered Mr Mahmoud to step down in an apparent bid to appease public anger over the acquittals of ex-regime officials accused of orchestrating violence against protesters last year.
