CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt's ousted president Hosni Mubarak was transferred on Wednesday to a military hospital almost a week after slipping and injuring himself in a prison shower, a security official said.

Mubarak was taken by ambulance from Torah jail to the Maadi military hospital in Cairo under heavy police protection, the official said, adding that the former strongman was due to undergo a head scan.

Earlier a deputy interior minister in charge of prison affairs, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, said Mubarak would be returned to his cell at Torah prison once his treatment is completed.

Mubarak, 84, fell in the shower on Saturday and was treated in the medical ward for a head injury and bruising, the state news agency Mena reported.
