BEIJING (AFP, AP) - Chinese author Mo Yan is delighted at winning this year's Nobel prize for literature, which he said has inspired him to "strive harder" in his writing, state media reported.
"On hearing the news that I won the award, I was very happy," Mo was quoted as saying by the official China News Service. "I will focus on creating new works. I will strive harder to thank everyone."
Mr Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy that hands out the Nobel awards, said the academy contacted Mo, and that the author was "overjoyed and scared".
Chinese social media exploded with pride after the announcement, while Mo's publisher called it a dream come true, but said Mo always played down the importance of prizes.
